Madrid is a truly living city, you can feel the energy right when landing in Barajas airport!
The capital is full of traditional bars and tapas restaurants. Madrid has a lot to show, beautiful squares, parks, worldwide famous museums.
Few cities boast an artistic pedigree quite as pure as Madrid’s: many art lovers return here again and again. For centuries, Spanish royals showered praise and riches upon the finest artists of the day, from home-grown talents such as Goya and Velázquez to Flemish and Italian greats. Masterpieces by these and other Spanish painters such as Picasso, Dalí and Miró now adorn the walls of the city’s world-class galleries. Three in particular are giants – the Museo del Prado, Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Rising above the humble claims of its local cuisine, Madrid has evolved into one of the richest culinary capitals of Europe. The city has wholeheartedly embraced all the creativity and innovation of Spain’s gastronomic revolution. But this acceptance of the new is wedded to a passion for the enduring traditions of Spanish cooking, for the conviviality of the eating experience and for showcasing the infinite variety of food from every Spanish region. From tapas in sleek temples to all that’s new to sit-down meals beneath centuries-old vaulted ceilings, eating in Madrid is a genuine pleasure.
Put simply, this is one beautiful city.
Tennis & the Spanish culture
Smashing gives you the opportunity during a long weekend to discover the capital of Spain through a tennis and gastronomic experience.
We will to play in one of the most exclusive tennis club in Madrid. The club has the best clay tennis courts in the city! Our coaches have prepared a complete tennis program during those 3 days and 9 hours of tennis. It will be intense, enjoyable and very instructive. Our tennis coaches are highly experimented pros with an international tennis background – some of them have played on the tour.
The first evening, we will take you on a tapas tour around Madrid to show you where the locals meet and eat and where you can immerse yourself in Madrid’s culture. This happens in historical bars and restaurants where the owners have been cooking and serving typical and delicious Spanish food the same way over the ages, from one generation to the next.
Our evening tapas tour in Madrid starts in the Las Letras neighbourhood, where a knowledgeable guide takes you for a stroll between the three stops where you’re going to sample a wide variety of Spanish tapas and drinks. Learn surprising facts about the history, architecture and culture of a city founded in the 9th century. Throughout the tour, you will better understand the local gastronomy and eating habits in Spain’s capital city.
Our first stop is at a tavern first opened almost 200 years ago, where we sample food and drinks from that very period. The original recipes for everything they serve here have been preserved for generations.
The second stop on our tapas tour in Madrid combines authentic tapas with traditional Spanish music in a centuries-old bar that remains a gastronomic institution for the locals to this day.
The final stop is at one of the most exclusive restaurants in Madrid. There, you have the opportunity to enjoy a gastronomic dinner with several courses, great Spanish wines and a luxurious dessert to end the tapas tour on a sweet note.
The next day, you will learn how to cook paella like a local!
We will start visiting the Antón Martín market to buy the groceries we will need to cook our menu. We’ll buy vegetables, seafood, and perhaps ham, olives, cheese, pastry… the offering and colouring of this traditional way of shopping daily supplies is endless. Back in the kitchen, you’ll have to apply yourself to prepare your sangría and your starter: gazpacho, that is a refreshing tomato-based chilled soup. Another taste of Spain worth mastering.
Later, you will get down to work to make your own paella, the most international Spanish dish, based on rice, seafood and chicken.
Along the preparation, our chef will tell its story including its origins and its place in Spanish culture as well as handy tips that help you make a paella to be proud of.
After cooking you will sit down to enjoy your creations as your lunch, and to share your experience with your fellow cooks. The best way to round up a memorable morning.
